NORTHERN VIETNAM

"Landscapes & Culture Photography Journey"
10-19 October 2028

This journey through Northern Vietnam is not simply about moving between destinations—it is about experiencing how the landscape gradually unfolds through changing light, atmosphere, and terrain.

Beginning in Hanoi, the route slowly leaves behind the rhythm of the city and moves north into quieter and more remote regions. Urban streets transition into rural countryside, mountain roads, limestone valleys, and expansive rice fields that stretch across the horizon.

In Cao Bang, the atmosphere feels calm and untouched. Mist drifts gently across the rice terraces of Phong Nam while local life moves quietly through the landscape, creating moments that feel both intimate and timeless. The journey then continues toward Ban Gioc Waterfall, where the scale of the environment becomes more dramatic—powerful water flows framed by dense greenery and layered rock formations.

Further west, the scenery transforms again as the route reaches Mu Cang Chai. Terraced hills begin to dominate the landscape, revealing endless curves and patterns shaped over generations. From Horseshoe Hill to Lao Chai and Mam Xoi, each location changes character throughout the day as shifting light reshapes the depth, texture, and atmosphere of the terrain.

Later, in Long Coc, the journey slows into a quieter rhythm. Rolling tea hills create soft repeating layers across the landscape, often covered by drifting fog that simplifies the scenery into subtle tones and minimalist compositions.

Throughout the expedition, the experience is shaped not only by the destinations themselves, but by timing—early departures, soft sunrise light, quiet evenings, and the slower moments in between. Travel is balanced with rest, allowing each place to be experienced naturally rather than rushed.

Designed for photographers of all levels, this journey focuses on landscape, culture, atmosphere, and observation—offering not only strong visual opportunities, but a deeper connection to Northern Vietnam itself.

Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi

Welcome to Vietnam.

To ensure a smooth start, participants are encouraged to arrive a day early to rest and adjust to the local time zone. We would be happy to recommend hotels for your stay.

Participants may arrive on any flight scheduled for this date and make their own way to the agreed hotel in Hanoi, which will serve as the official meeting point for the journey.

For those who wish to explore, Hanoi offers a variety of traditional craft villages that provide unique cultural and photographic opportunities. Alternatively, an earlier departure can be arranged to maximize time in the field.

Day 2 — Hanoi to Cao Bang

The journey begins with a departure from Hanoi, leaving behind the rhythm of the city as the road gradually leads north into quieter and more open landscapes.

As the distance unfolds, the scenery slowly transitions from urban surroundings into rural countryside, with small villages, rice fields, and winding mountain roads shaping the route. The drive itself becomes part of the experience, offering an introduction to the changing atmosphere of Northern Vietnam.

By late afternoon, the group arrives in the Cao Bang region, where the landscapes begin to feel noticeably more remote and untouched.

The first photography session takes place at Eye Mountain, a unique natural formation surrounded by wide valleys and layered mountain scenery. As the light softens toward sunset, the fields, distant peaks, and quiet rhythm of local life create a calm and expansive atmosphere.

After sunset, the journey continues toward Trung Khanh for an overnight stay.

Day 3 — Layers of Light in Phong Nam

The morning begins early in Phong Nam, where the first light slowly reveals layers of rice fields stretching across the valley.

Mist often lingers just above the landscape, softening the scenery and creating a calm, timeless atmosphere. Photography sessions focus not only on the landscape itself, but also on human elements such as local fishermen moving quietly through the water—adding scale, movement, and story to the composition.

After the sunrise session, the group returns to the hotel for breakfast and a short rest.

Later in the afternoon, the journey returns to the same area for a sunset session. Although the location remains familiar, the changing direction of light transforms the mood entirely—warmer tones, longer shadows, and a different visual rhythm emerge across the valley.

The contrast between sunrise and sunset offers an opportunity to experience the same landscape from a completely new perspective.

Accommodation: Hotel in Cao Bang

Day 4 — Toward the Falls of Ban Gioc

The morning begins in the rice fields of Ngoc Con, where soft layers of light gradually reveal subtle textures and quieter details across the landscape.

Compared to previous locations, the atmosphere here feels more intimate and grounded, focusing on smaller elements rather than vast panoramic scenes.

After breakfast, the journey continues toward the bamboo forest of Ngoc Khe. Surrounded by dense vertical bamboo lines and filtered light, the environment shifts into something calmer, enclosed, and highly atmospheric.

Later in the afternoon, the route opens once again as the group heads toward Ban Gioc Waterfall—one of Northern Vietnam’s most iconic natural landmarks.

At sunset, the waterfall reveals its immense scale and movement, contrasting beautifully against the stillness of the surrounding landscape. As the light fades, softer tones begin to shape the scene, offering a final opportunity to capture its atmosphere before returning for the evening.

Day 5 — From Highlands to Hanoi

The day begins at Ha Lang Grass Hill, where gentle landscapes and soft morning light create a quieter and more minimal atmosphere compared to previous days.

Wide open views and rolling contours stretch across the horizon, offering a calmer visual rhythm before the journey transitions once again.

After breakfast, the group visits Phia Thap Incense Village, where traditional craftsmanship and vibrant colors add a strong cultural dimension to the expedition.

By midday, the return journey toward Hanoi begins, gradually reconnecting with the pace of the city after days spent in the northern highlands.

Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi

Day 6 — Into the Terraced Hills of Mu Cang Chai

Leaving Hanoi once again, the journey continues westward toward Mu Cang Chai, a region known for its iconic terraced landscapes.

The drive itself becomes part of the experience, with winding mountain roads and constantly changing scenery gradually introducing a completely different atmosphere from the earlier stages of the trip.

By afternoon, the group arrives at Horseshoe Hill, where the terraces curve naturally into layered and flowing compositions across the hillsides.

As sunset approaches, the light slowly reveals depth, texture, and repeating patterns throughout the landscape.

If weather conditions allow, the evening may also provide an opportunity for Milky Way photography.

Accommodation: Hotel in Mu Cang Chai

Day 7 — Patterns of Mu Cang Chai

The morning begins at Mam Xoi Hill in La Ban Tan, one of the most iconic viewpoints in Mu Cang Chai.

As the first light touches the terraces, the landscape gradually reveals layers, curves, and patterns shaped through generations of farming traditions.

Later in the day, the journey continues into a nearby bamboo forest, where the atmosphere shifts once again into a more enclosed and textured environment.

By afternoon, the group heads toward Lao Chai for sunset photography. Under warm directional light, the terraced hills begin to reveal strong depth and layered compositions stretching into the distance.

If conditions allow, an optional Milky Way session may take place during the evening.

Accommodation: Hotel in Mu Cang Chai

Day 8 — Quiet Evenings in Hu Tru Lin

The morning begins once again in Lao Chai, where familiar landscapes reveal a completely different mood under changing light conditions.

The softer atmosphere of sunrise encourages a slower and more intentional approach to photography, focusing on subtle variations in light, texture, and composition.

Later in the morning, the group photographs local corn houses, adding a quieter cultural element to the journey and offering a more intimate perspective compared to the expansive terrace landscapes.

As the day continues, the route moves toward Hu Tru Lin, a less-visited area with a quieter and more isolated atmosphere.

At sunset, the hills gradually soften under fading light, creating a calm and reflective environment for the final photography session of the day.

If weather conditions allow, participants may also photograph the Milky Way during the evening.

Accommodation: Hotel in Mu Cang Chai Region

Day 9 — From Highland Curves to Tea Hills of Long Coc

The day begins at Mong Ngua Hill, where rolling terrain and soft morning light create a smooth and minimal landscape unlike the terraces of previous days.

As sunrise unfolds, subtle layers and natural curves emerge across the hills, forming quiet and balanced compositions.

After the session, the group checks out and continues toward Long Coc, where the scenery transforms once again into endless tea hills shaped by repetition and rhythm.

By sunset, the atmosphere becomes especially soft and atmospheric. Layers of tea bushes, drifting mist, and changing light simplify the landscape into gentle patterns and tones.

Accommodation: Hotel near Long Coc

Day 10 — Final Light and Return to Hanoi

The final morning begins in the quiet tea hills of Long Coc, where mist often drifts softly between the repeating layers of the landscape.

The atmosphere feels calm and dreamlike, offering one final opportunity to slow down and capture the essence of Northern Vietnam through softer tones and subtle light.

Portrait sessions inspired by Muong ethnic culture add a final human element to the journey before returning toward Hanoi.

By late morning, the return drive begins, gradually transitioning back toward the city.

For participants who wish to continue exploring, there is an opportunity to visit traditional craft villages around Hanoi before the journey officially concludes.

Arrival in Hanoi marks the end of the expedition.
