Kazakhstan "Mangystau Region"
A Journey Across Earth’s Most Surreal Terrains
02-11 May 2027

Step into the surreal landscapes of Mangystau Region, one of the most remote and visually striking regions of Kazakhstan.
This photography expedition takes you deep into the vast expanse of the Ustyurt Plateau—a land shaped by time, where dramatic canyons, towering chalk cliffs, salt flats, and alien-like rock formations create scenes that feel far beyond Earth.
Traveling by 4x4 vehicles across rugged off-road terrain, the journey moves through constantly changing landscapes—from the layered formations of Kyzylkup and Mount Bokty to the immense cliffs of Bozzhyra, the minimal beauty of Sor Tuzbair, and the dramatic silhouettes of Airakty Valley.
Designed for photographers of all levels, this expedition focuses on working with natural light, atmosphere, and composition across sunrise, sunset, and the shifting conditions of the desert. More than simply visiting destinations, the experience is about understanding the rhythm of the landscape itself—raw, immersive, and deeply connected to the environment.
With a combination of remote camping experiences and selected hotel stays throughout the journey, this expedition offers both adventure and comfort while exploring one of Central Asia’s most otherworldly environments—where every frame feels like it belongs to another planet.

Day 1 — Arrival in Aktau
On Day 1, participants arrive in Aktau, the main gateway to the Mangystau Region and a coastal city located along the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Most international connections to Aktau are available via Astana, Almaty, or other major transit hubs.
Participants may arrive on any flight scheduled for this date and make their own way to the agreed hotel in Aktau, which will serve as the official meeting point for the expedition.
After check-in, there will be time to rest, settle in, and prepare for the journey ahead.
In the evening, participants will gather for an informal group meeting—an opportunity to meet fellow participants, discuss the itinerary, and go through important information regarding the expedition, photography conditions, and remote desert travel. Please note that meals on this day are not included in the tour package and will be at each participant’s own expense.
This is also the perfect time to organize camera gear, prepare batteries, and ask any final questions before entering the remote landscapes of Mangystau. Since several locations are far from permanent facilities, participants are encouraged to bring extra batteries, power banks, and charging accessories. Portable generators will also be available during the expedition to help recharge equipment when needed.
Accommodation: Hotel in Aktau (Hotel Recommendation: Aston Hotel)
Day 2 — Into the Desert of Mangystau
The day begins in Aktau, where participants will be picked up by 4x4 vehicle at 12:00 PM before departing toward Kyzylkup, one of the most unique landscapes in the Mangystau Region.
The journey takes around 3–4 hours, gradually leaving the city behind as the terrain transforms into vast desert plains and open horizons. By late afternoon, you arrive at Kyzylkup—often referred to as the “Tiramisu Canyon” for its distinctive layered rock formations.
Sunset photography will focus on the textures, curves, and natural patterns shaped by the changing desert light.
Accommodation: Tent Camp at Kyzylkup
Day 3 — Sculpted by Time
The morning begins with a sunrise session at Kyzylkup, where the landscape reveals entirely different tones and textures under soft morning light.
After breakfast, the journey continues toward Mount Bokty, one of the most iconic geological formations in the region. The open desert scenery gradually shifts throughout the drive, creating constantly changing perspectives.
A sunset photography session will be held at Mount Bokty, focusing on its dramatic layered structure and pyramid-like form.
Accommodation: Tent Camp near Mount Bokty
Day 4 — Echoes of the Desert and the Road Beyond
The day begins once again at Mount Bokty, where sunrise reveals subtle shadows and textures across the landscape.
After spending the morning photographing the area, the journey continues toward the city of Zhanaozen across wide desert terrain and open horizons.
Along the way, a final sunset session captures the changing atmosphere of the desert before arriving in the city by evening.
Accommodation: Hotel in Zhanaozen

Day 5 — Into the Depths of Bozzhyra
The morning begins in Zhanaozen with a slower pace before continuing deeper into the Mangystau Region.
Before departure, participants will photograph the city from above using drones, highlighting the contrast between urban structures and the surrounding desert landscape.
After lunch, the expedition continues toward Bozzhyra—one of the most iconic and surreal locations in Kazakhstan. Massive white cliffs, sharp ridges, and vast canyon systems create an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly.
The remainder of the day is spent exploring the area and preparing for the upcoming photography sessions.
Accommodation: Tent Camp in Bozzhyra
Day 6 — Between the Lower and Upper Worlds of Bozzhyra
The day begins by exploring the lower formations of Bozzhyra, where changing light and perspective reveal new textures and depth across the canyon landscape.
After breakfast, the expedition moves toward the upper viewpoint of Bozzhyra. From above, the scale of the formations becomes even more dramatic, with expansive cliffs and ridgelines stretching into the distance.
Sunset photography focuses on shadows, contours, and layered compositions created by the evening light.
Accommodation: Tent Camp at Upper Bozzhyra
Day 7 — Light Across the Salt and Stone
Sunrise begins once again at Upper Bozzhyra, where the direction of morning light completely transforms the landscape.
After breakfast, the journey continues toward Sor Tuzbair, a striking salt lake known for its flat white surface and minimal surroundings.
Compared to the dramatic cliffs of Bozzhyra, Sor Tuzbair offers a quieter and more minimal visual atmosphere, where texture, reflection, and scale become the main photographic elements.
Accommodation: Tent Camp near Sor Tuzbair

Day 8 — From Salt Flats to the Valley of Castles
The day begins with sunrise photography at Sor Tuzbair before continuing toward Airakty Valley across remote desert terrain.
Known as the “Valley of Castles,” Airakty features towering rock formations resembling ancient fortresses rising from the desert floor. The structured shapes and dramatic silhouettes create strong visual compositions during sunset.
After the photography session, the journey continues to a nearby hotel for the evening.
Accommodation: Hotel near Airakty Valley

Day 9 — Shapes of Stone and Time
The day begins early with a sunrise session at Airakty Valley, where the rock formations reveal a completely different atmosphere under the soft morning light.
After sunrise, the journey continues toward Mount Sherkala, one of the region’s most recognizable geological formations, known for its distinctive shape and layered textures. From there, the expedition moves onward to Torysh Valley, famous for its unusual spherical rock formations scattered across the desert landscape.
Throughout the day, the scenery continues to shift between dramatic mountain formations, open steppe, and remote desert terrain—offering a constantly changing visual experience.
By late afternoon to evening, the expedition returns to Aktau after a full day crossing remote landscapes and multiple photography locations. Arrival time may vary depending on weather, road conditions, and shooting duration throughout the day.
Note : Day 9 officially marks the end of the expedition upon returning to Aktau. Participants with flights on the same evening may proceed directly to the airport according to their own arrangements. For those departing the following day, it is recommended to arrange an additional hotel stay in Aktau, as accommodation after the expedition is not included in the tour package.
