Sumba - Where the Wild Still Speaks
Sumba is a place where the wild still speaks—through vast rolling hills, quiet coastlines, and traditions that remain deeply rooted in time. It is an island where the landscape feels untouched, and every scene carries a sense of space, silence, and character that is increasingly rare to find.
This journey is designed to explore both the raw beauty of nature and the cultural depth that defines Sumba. From the iconic silhouettes of Walakiri’s dancing trees to the open horizons of Wairinding Hills, and the rugged coastlines of West Sumba, each location offers a distinct visual language shaped by terrain, atmosphere, and tradition.
Beyond the landscapes, Sumba reveals itself through subtle details—traditional villages, daily life, and the rhythm of a place that moves at its own pace. These are moments that cannot be staged, only observed and experienced.
Rather than rushing from one location to another, the experience is built around timing and intention—arriving when conditions are at their best, and allowing space to fully engage with each environment. This approach creates opportunities not only for strong images, but for a deeper connection with the place itself.
Across East and West Sumba, this journey invites you to slow down, observe, and create—capturing images that reflect not just what is seen, but what is felt.
Below is a carefully designed journey across East and West Sumba, following the natural rhythm of the island—from quiet mornings to dramatic sunsets, and the spaces in between.

15-24 May 2026
Day 1 — Arrival & First Impressions
Arrival in East Sumba. After check-in and some time to rest from the journey, we begin easing into the rhythm of the island. In the late afternoon, we head to Walakiri Dancing Trees—one of Sumba’s most iconic coastal locations—where the unique mangrove silhouettes create striking compositions against the open horizon.
This first session is an introduction to the landscape and atmosphere of Sumba, allowing time to explore compositions, understand the environment, and adjust to the pace of the journey.
Overnight in East Sumba.
Day 2 — Walakiri in Changing Tides
We return to Walakiri before sunrise, when the landscape feels quieter and more intimate. The soft morning tones offer a completely different mood compared to the previous evening, creating opportunities for minimal and atmospheric compositions.
After breakfast, the day is left open for rest or personal exploration, allowing time to recharge between sessions. In the afternoon, we revisit Walakiri once again—this time focusing on refining compositions, experimenting with perspectives, and capturing the changing conditions as the day transitions into sunset.
Overnight in East Sumba.
Day 3 — Crossing Landscapes
We start early with a sunrise session at Tenau Hills, where gentle layers of terrain and morning mist can create a soft and textured scene. After breakfast and hotel check-out, we begin our journey toward West Sumba.
Along the way, we stop at Wairinding Hills, known for its expansive rolling landscapes that shift in color and texture depending on the season. This location offers a strong sense of scale and openness, ideal for wide compositions.
In the late afternoon, we arrive at Praijing Traditional Village for a sunset session, where architecture, culture, and landscape come together—offering a deeper visual narrative beyond pure scenery.
Overnight in West Sumba.
Day 4 — Fields and Coastlines
An early start takes us to Weekacura Rice Fields, where layered paddies and reflections create calm and structured compositions in the soft morning light. The scene here is quiet and meditative, contrasting with the more dramatic locations of previous days.
After breakfast, we take time to rest before heading out again in the afternoon toward Mandorak Beach. Known for its rugged cliffs and secluded coastline, this location offers a more dramatic setting as waves meet the land, especially during sunset when the light adds depth and contrast to the scene.
Overnight in West Sumba.

Day 5 — Final Frames & Departure
Our final morning begins at Watu Malandong, a coastal viewpoint offering sweeping ocean views and dramatic cliffs. It’s a fitting location to conclude the journey, combining scale, texture, and atmosphere in one last session.
After sunrise, we return to the hotel for check-out before transferring to the airport for departure flights to Bali, Surabaya, or Jakarta.
End of trip.
Day 6 — Between the Lower and Upper Worlds of Bozzhyra
The day begins in Bozzhyra, exploring the lower formations from a different perspective. With changing light and angles, the landscape reveals new depth—highlighting the scale of the cliffs and the textures carved over time.
After breakfast, you pack up and begin the move to a new camping location.
The journey takes you toward the upper Bozzhyra, where the viewpoint opens dramatically over the entire formation. From above, the landscape feels even more vast, with sharp ridgelines and expansive drop-offs stretching into the distance.
A sunset session will be held here, focusing on the elevated perspective and the way light defines the contours of the terrain—creating strong lines, shadows, and layers across the canyon.
Tonight, you stay in a tent camp at the upper section of Bozzhyra, surrounded by one of the most striking landscapes in Mangystau Region.
Day 7 — Light Across the Salt and Stone
The day begins at the upper viewpoint of Bozzhyra, returning to the same location as the previous sunset—but now under a completely different light direction. At sunrise, the landscape reveals a new character, with shadows falling across the formations in ways that reshape the scene.
After breakfast, you pack up and begin the journey to the next location—Sor Tuzbair, with an approximate 2-hour drive across remote terrain.
Sor Tuzbair is a unique salt lake, known for its flat white surface and minimal surroundings. The simplicity of the landscape creates a clean and striking visual, where textures, reflections, and scale become the main focus.
The day continues in this new environment, offering a completely different atmosphere compared to the dramatic cliffs of Bozzhyra.

Day 8 — From Salt Flats to the Valley of Castles
The day begins at Sor Tuzbair, where you return to the same location for a sunrise session. Under the soft morning light, the flat white surface reveals subtle textures and tones, offering a completely different mood from the previous day.
After breakfast, you begin the journey toward Airakty Valley, with an approximate 3-hour drive across the desert.
Also known as the “Valley of Castles,” Airakty is defined by its towering rock formations that resemble ancient fortresses rising from the ground. The landscape feels both dramatic and structured, with natural formations creating strong silhouettes against the open sky.
A sunset session will be held here, focusing on the shapes and shadows of the formations as the light lowers and defines their contours.
After dinner, you continue to a nearby yurt camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by the quiet vastness of the desert.

Day 9 — Shapes of Stone and Time
The day begins early as you return to Airakty Valley for a sunrise session. The formations reveal a different character under the morning light, making this one of the most visually interesting moments in the valley.
After sunrise, the journey continues toward Mount Sherkala. Often compared to Mount Bokty, Sherkala stands out with its distinct shape and varied rock colors, offering a different visual interpretation of the region’s geological forms.
From here, you continue to Torysh Valley, known for its unusual landscape filled with spherical, egg-shaped rock formations scattered across the terrain. The formations create a unique and almost surreal setting, unlike anything else along the journey.
By the end of the day, you make your way back to the city of Aktau.
Tonight, you stay in Aktau, returning once again to a more settled environment after days spent exploring the remote landscapes of Mangystau.

Day 10 — Departure
The journey comes to a close in Aktau.
After breakfast, you check out from the hotel and prepare for departure. All participants will be transferred to the airport, marking the final step of the trip.
As you leave Mangystau Region, the vast landscapes, unique formations, and quiet moments across the desert remain as lasting impressions of the journey.
End of trip.
