Northern Vietnam: Landscapes & Culture Photography Journey
This journey through Northern Vietnam is not simply about moving from one location to another—it is about experiencing how the landscape gradually reveals itself along the way.
Starting from Hanoi, the route unfolds toward the remote northern regions, where the scenery becomes increasingly raw and expansive. The transition is subtle at first—busy streets slowly give way to quiet countryside, and eventually to vast valleys, limestone formations, and terraced hills that stretch far into the distance.
In Cao Bang, the atmosphere feels untouched and calm. Morning mist drifts across rice fields as local life begins quietly, offering intimate moments that are as much about observation as they are about photography. From there, the journey continues to Ban Gioc Waterfall, where the scale of nature becomes more pronounced—water cascading across wide rock formations, surrounded by dense greenery.
As the route moves further west toward Mu Cang Chai, the landscape transforms again. Terraced rice fields carve patterns into the hillsides, creating depth and rhythm that change with the light throughout the day. Each sunrise and sunset reveals a different character—sometimes soft and minimal, sometimes dramatic and layered.
Later, in Long Coc, the scenery becomes more refined and structured. Rolling tea hills form repeating patterns across the land, often wrapped in morning fog that softens the entire scene into something almost surreal.
Throughout the journey, the experience is shaped not only by the locations, but by the timing—early mornings, late afternoons, and the quiet hours in between. Travel is balanced with rest, allowing each place to be approached with intention rather than urgency.
This is not a fast-paced itinerary.
It is a journey built around light, atmosphere, and the natural rhythm of the landscape—designed to give space for both observation and creation.

18-27 October 2026
Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi
Welcome to Vietnam.
To ensure a smooth start, participants are encouraged to arrive a day early to rest and adjust to the local time zone. We would be happy to recommend hotels for your stay.
For those who wish to explore, Hanoi offers a variety of traditional craft villages that provide unique cultural and photographic opportunities. Alternatively, an earlier departure can be arranged to maximize time in the field.
Day 2 — Hanoi to Cao Bang
The journey begins with a departure from Hanoi, leaving behind the rhythm of the city as the road gradually leads north into quieter and more open landscapes.
As the distance unfolds, the scenery begins to shift—urban surroundings slowly transition into rural countryside, with small villages, fields, and winding roads shaping the route. This long drive is not just a transfer, but an introduction to the changing character of Northern Vietnam.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the Cao Bang region, where the atmosphere feels noticeably more remote and untouched.
Our first photography session takes place at Eye Mountain, a unique natural formation set within a wide valley. As the light begins to soften, the landscape reveals its depth—layers of fields, distant peaks, and the quiet presence of local life.
After sunset, we continue to Trung Khanh town for an overnight stay, preparing for an early start the following morning.
Day 3 — Layers of Light in Phong Nam
The day begins early in the quiet landscape of Phong Nam, where the first light slowly reveals layers of rice fields stretching across the valley.
Morning mist often lingers just above the ground, softening the scene and creating a calm, almost timeless atmosphere. Here, we focus not only on the landscape, but also on human elements—local fishermen moving through the water, adding scale and story to the composition.
After the sunrise session, we return to the hotel for breakfast and a short rest.
In the afternoon, we head back to the same area for a sunset session. Although the location remains the same, the light transforms the entire scene—shadows stretch longer, colors become warmer, and the landscape takes on a different mood.
This contrast between morning and evening offers an opportunity to explore the same place from a new perspective, both visually and creatively.
Overnight stay in Cao Bang.
Day 4 — Toward the Falls of Ban Gioc
The morning begins in the quiet rice fields of Ngoc Con, where soft light gradually reveals the landscape in gentle layers. Compared to the previous locations, the atmosphere here feels more intimate—less expansive, but rich in subtle details and textures.
After sunrise, we return for breakfast before continuing the journey deeper into the region.
Later in the day, we explore the bamboo forest at Ngoc Khe. Light filters softly through the dense vertical lines of bamboo, creating a completely different visual environment—calm, enclosed, and atmospheric.
As the afternoon unfolds, the landscape opens once again as we make our way toward Ban Gioc Waterfall.
By sunset, we arrive at one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Northern Vietnam. The waterfall stretches wide across the border, its powerful flow contrasting with the surrounding stillness. As the light fades, the scene shifts into softer tones, offering a final moment to capture its scale and presence.
After the session, we return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 5 — From Highlands to Hanoi
We begin the day at Ha Lang Grass Hill, where open landscapes and soft morning light create a calm and expansive setting.
The wide views and gentle contours of the hills offer a quieter, more minimal contrast to the previous days.
After breakfast, we visit Phia Thap Incense Village, where vibrant colors and traditional craftsmanship provide a strong cultural element to the journey.
By midday, we begin the return to Hanoi, marking a transition between regions and preparing for the next stage of the trip.
Day 6 — Into the Terraced Hills of Mu Cang Chai
Leaving Hanoi once again, the journey continues westward toward Mu Cang Chai, a region known for its iconic terraced landscapes.
The drive itself is part of the experience, with mountain roads and changing scenery gradually introducing a new visual rhythm.
In the afternoon, we arrive at Horseshoe Hill, where the terraces curve naturally into a striking composition.
As the light softens, the layers of the landscape become more defined, revealing depth and pattern across the hills.
If conditions allow, the night offers an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way.
Overnight stay in Mu Cang Chai.
Day 7 — Patterns of Mu Cang Chai
The day begins at Mam Xoi Hill in La Ban Tan, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the region.
As the first light touches the terraces, the landscape gradually reveals its structure—curves, layers, and patterns shaped over generations.
Later, we move to a nearby bamboo forest, where the atmosphere shifts into a more enclosed and textured environment.
In the afternoon, we head to Lao Chai for sunset, capturing wide views of terraced hills under warm, directional light.
Optional Milky Way session depending on weather conditions.
Day 8 — Quiet Evenings in Hu Tru Lin
The day begins once again in Lao Chai, where the first light reveals the terraced landscape in a softer and more familiar rhythm.
Even in a place we’ve visited before, the changing angle of light creates a different mood—subtle variations that invite a slower and more intentional approach to photographing the scene.
Later in the morning, we take time to capture the corn houses, adding a cultural element to the journey. These simple structures, surrounded by the landscape, offer a more intimate perspective compared to the wide vistas of previous days.
As the day progresses, we move toward Hu Tru Lin, a quieter and less-visited area.
By sunset, the atmosphere becomes calm and understated. The landscape here feels more isolated, allowing for a more personal and reflective shooting experience as the light fades gently across the hills.
If conditions allow, the night offers an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way, bringing a final layer of depth to the day.

Day 9 — From Highland Curves to Tea Hills of Long Coc
The day begins at Mong Ngua Hill, where soft rolling landscapes stretch gently across the horizon. Compared to the terraced fields of previous days, the terrain here feels smoother and more minimal, offering a quieter visual rhythm.
As the first light rises, the hills reveal subtle layers and natural curves, creating a calm and balanced composition.
After the session, we check out and begin the journey toward Long Coc, where the landscape transitions once again.
By late afternoon, we arrive at the tea hills—an environment defined by repetition and structure. Rows of tea bushes flow across the land, forming natural patterns that shift with light and perspective.
At sunset, the scene becomes especially atmospheric. Soft light and occasional mist move through the hills, simplifying the landscape into gentle layers of tone and shape.
Overnight stay near Long Coc.
Day 10 — Final Light and Return to Hanoi
The final day begins in the quiet hills of Long Coc, where the landscape often reveals its most delicate atmosphere in the early hours.
Morning mist drifts between the tea hills, softening the repeating patterns and creating a serene, almost dreamlike setting. It is a moment to slow down and capture the final impressions of the journey.
We also take time to create portrait sessions inspired by the Muong ethnic culture, adding a human element to the closing chapter.
By late morning, we begin the return to Hanoi.
For those who wish, there is an opportunity to explore and photograph traditional craft villages around the city, offering a final glimpse into Vietnam’s cultural richness.
Arrival in Hanoi marks the end of the journey.
