Mangystau - Kazakhstan’s Otherworldly Landscapes

A Journey Across Earth’s Most Surreal Terrains

Step into the surreal landscapes of Mangystau Region, one of the most remote and visually striking regions of Kazakhstan.

This journey takes you deep into the vast expanse of the Ustyurt Plateau—a land shaped by time, where dramatic canyons, towering chalk cliffs, and alien-like rock formations create scenes that feel far beyond Earth.

Over the course of this photography expedition, you will move through landscapes that constantly shift in scale and character. From endless desert horizons to intricate geological formations, every location offers a new perspective and a different way to frame the environment.

Traveling in 4x4 vehicles, you will navigate rugged off-road terrain that remains largely untouched, reaching places that few travelers have access to. The journey itself becomes part of the experience—raw, immersive, and deeply connected to the land.

Designed for photographers of all levels, this trip focuses on capturing the essence of Mangystau through changing conditions—sunrise, sunset, and everything in between. It’s not just about taking photos, but understanding how light, texture, and composition come together in a landscape this unique.

More than a destination,
this is a journey through one of Central Asia’s most otherworldly environments—
where every frame feels like it belongs to another planet.

15-24 May 2026
Day 1 — Arrival in Aktau

You arrive in Aktau, a coastal city located along the shores of the Caspian Sea and the main gateway to the Mangystau Region.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is kept light, allowing you to settle in and adjust after your journey.

Aktau offers a different first impression—more urban and structured—before the landscapes quickly shift into the vast and remote terrain that defines Mangystau.

The journey begins here, at the edge between city and desert.

Day 2 — Into the Desert of Mangystau

The day begins in Aktau with breakfast, before setting out for the journey ahead.

You will be picked up by 4x4 jeep and begin the drive toward Kyzylkup, one of the most unique landscapes in the Mangystau Region.

The journey takes around 3–4 hours, gradually leaving the city behind as the terrain transforms into vast desert plains and open horizons. The sense of space becomes more pronounced, with minimal signs of civilization along the way.

By late afternoon, you arrive at Kyzylkup—often referred to as the “Tiramisu Canyon” for its distinctive layered rock formations. The soft curves and striped patterns create a natural composition that stands out, especially during sunset.

You spend time here capturing the landscape as the light shifts, enhancing the textures and colors of the formations from a photography perspective.

Tonight, you stay in a tent camp, surrounded by the quiet and openness of the desert—an immersive experience far from any urban setting.

Day 3 — Sculpted by Time

The morning begins at Kyzylkup, where you return to the same landscape under a completely different light. At sunrise, the soft tones reveal new textures and subtle contrasts, offering a fresh perspective from different angles.

After breakfast, you pack up and continue the journey to a nearby location—Mount Bokty, one of the most iconic formations in the Mangystau Region.

The drive is relatively short, but the scenery continues to evolve, with open desert stretching in every direction.

A sunset session will be held here, focusing on the distinct layered structure and pyramid-like shape of Mount Bokty. As the light softens, the textures and tones of the landscape become more defined, creating strong and clean compositions.

Tonight, you stay in a tent camp near the area, surrounded by the quiet vastness of the desert.

Day 4 — Echoes of the Desert and the Road Beyond

The day begins once again at Mount Bokty, where you revisit the landscape under the soft light of sunrise. Familiar shapes take on a different mood, with subtle tones and shadows revealing details that were not visible the day before.

You spend the morning here at a relaxed pace, continuing to explore and photograph the area until lunchtime.

Afterward, the journey continues toward the city of Zhanaozen. The drive moves across open desert terrain, with wide horizons stretching in every direction.

Along the way, a sunset session takes place—capturing the final light across the landscape as the day slowly comes to an end.

By evening, you arrive in Zhanaozen and check in to your hotel, shifting into a more comfortable setting after the past nights in the desert.

Day 5 — Into the Depths of Bozzhyra

The day begins in Zhanaozen without a sunrise session, allowing for a slower start.

In the morning, you will capture the city from above using a drone—highlighting its unique setting in the middle of the desert. From this perspective, the contrast between structured urban forms and the surrounding barren landscape becomes clearly visible.

After lunch, the journey continues toward Bozzhyra, with an approximate 2-hour drive across remote terrain.

Bozzhyra is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Mangystau Region, formed millions of years ago as part of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Today, it sits around 200 meters below sea level, featuring dramatic white cliffs, sharp ridges, and vast open space that feels almost otherworldly.

The rest of the day is spent settling into the area and preparing for exploration.

Tonight, you stay in a tent camp, surrounded by the raw and untouched landscape of Bozzhyra.

Day 6 — Traditions and Red Rock Landscapes

The day begins with a unique cultural experience—photographing a local eagle hunter, a tradition that has been passed down for generations in Kyrgyzstan. The connection between the hunter and the eagle reflects a deep relationship with nature, offering a powerful and authentic subject to capture.

From here, the journey continues to Fairy Tale Canyon. Known for its naturally sculpted rock formations, the canyon features warm tones and unusual shapes, creating a landscape that feels almost surreal yet grounded in natural processes.

The route then takes you toward Jeti-Oguz Valley, where dramatic red rock formations rise against the surrounding greenery. The area is well known for its striking contrast and open valley setting.

Nearby, you continue to explore the area around Jeti-Oguz Peak, using the mountain as a strong background element for your compositions. The surrounding valley offers wide, open views with layers of landscape that add depth to the scene.

By the end of the day, you arrive in Karakol.

Tonight, you stay in Karakol, a small town known as a gateway to the eastern side of Issyk-Kul, offering a more settled and comfortable stop after a full day of exploration.

Day 7 — Where the Journey Comes Full Circle

The day begins early with a sunrise session at Turgen Valley. Surrounded by open landscapes and distant mountain ranges, the valley offers a calm and spacious setting to start the day, with soft morning light gradually revealing the details of the terrain.

After the session, you return to Karakol for breakfast, taking some time to rest before the final journey.

Following lunch, you begin the transfer back to Bishkek. The drive once again follows parts of the Issyk-Kul Lake, offering one last look at the vast landscapes that have defined the trip.

By evening, you arrive in Bishkek for a farewell dinner—closing the journey with a shared moment, reflecting on the experiences, places, and stories collected along the way.

Day 8 — Departure

The journey comes to a close in Bishkek.

After breakfast, you check out from the hotel and prepare for departure. A transfer is arranged to the airport, marking the final step of the trip.

As you leave, the landscapes, moments, and experiences from across Kyrgyzstan stay with you—quietly shaping the way you remember the journey.

End of trip.
